Rosati/ReMax PolarCat #4 5k at Newark 1/20/08
How cold was it? The temperature sign said ten degrees; the wind was said to be 20mph. Jimmy Addona, who has participated in all Newark PolarCat races said it was the fourth coldest in the Newark PolarCats races.
Numbers don’t always explain cold temperatures. The NFL playoff broadcasts were an orgy of low numbers and wind chill. I’m old (and I will now digress. You can skip this part and go directly to results and it will not be sinful).
Start digression: When I was quite young, cold temperature had only five classifications.
From warmest to non-warmest they were:
1.Chilly
2.You need your mittens
3.Freezin
4.So cold your nose will freeze off
5.Brass monkey cold (description used only by uncles and frowned upon by mothers)
The PolarCat on Sunday was run under 4.5 conditions! That takes guts by the 27 who did it. Congratulations.
Note about my efforts to write about the cold: The English major I live with and love pointed out that although descriptions of cold are vague, my descriptions of myself as
“old” and “quite young” are equally vague.
I know I could have listed my age in years, but that isn’t as descriptive as the terms we learned when I was “still wet behind the ears” which is younger than “old enough to know better” and younger yet than “old enough to die for your country but not old enough to (fill in the blank)”…and so it goes, all the way through “older than the hills”

Breakfast omelets prepared by Greg Christo under unusual conditions. Thanks to Greg and his help for a wonderful breakfast. Thanks also for the ample supply of beverages by the “dish to pass” folks. Hope you have all warmed up.
